Yvonne Watson  - Textile artist

I am interested in the change of landscape over time and the many layers, some of which are hidden, that are left behind by successive generations to relate a narrative.

In some of my work I have cut into the fabric revealing these layers whilst in others I have built up layers. The latter are on a more personal level and relate to my interest in genealogy taking imagery from a personal history.

I use my own photographs or maps as a source of inspiration manipulating the images on the computer and translating them into art pieces.

I have screen printed imagery relating to the physical features of landscape and overprinted and painted onto the fabric creating more and more layers.

The use of text is an important part of my visual language as I am fascinated with the shape and rhythm that the repetition of related words can create. My own manipulation of the text creates another layer to the visual narrative.

I would like to see the development of art in our community with more public participation. There is also a need for more facilities for contemporary art practitioners. This could be through more galleries open studios and community based projects as I firmly believe that we all have something to gain from the visual arts.
