Yvonne Watson - Textile artist
My work explores issues surrounding personal freedom and space. I work with materials that can be manipulated to create textural surfaces that give the work a dynamic quality. By trapping and manipulating fabric within handmade paper, the surface becomes flexible, expanding and contracting in response to its surroundings.
The use of text is an important part of my work as the shape of words and the patterns created by the repetition of words fascinates me. I use the computer or the surface of the fabric to make distortions in the printed text. The pieces carry associations with clothing but released from the body they become sculptural textiles. Besides large-scale work I also make some small presentation packaging pieces where the container has become the artwork – not to trap but to enhance the object it contains.
I would like to see the development of art in our community with more public participation. There is also a need for more facilities for contemporary art practitioners. This could be through more galleries open studios and community based projects as I firmly believe that we all have something to gain from the visual arts.
